Staff Presentation on the Computer Network Upgrade Project
Staff are invited to attend a presentation regarding the Computer Network Upgrade project currently underway. It is a technical presentation aimed at staff with IT knowledge.
The Universitys computer network is in the process of being upgraded to provide more capacity and a faster, more reliable service. The new network will also be integrated with the security system installed in 2007 and that will change security across campus in two ways:
There will be much more mobility. Currently, most staff can only use the network in their own building and have limited, if any, ability to connect from other buildings. The new network will provide more consistency across campus.
Inappropriate use of the network will be restricted. Currently, in excess of 50% of all traffic on the Universitys computer is of a malicious nature (viruses and other similar problems). This consumes valuable resource and slows down legitimate use of the network. We will be able to eliminate much of this traffic.
ITS recognises there is potential for inadvertently stopping legitimate University business if these changes are not planned thoroughly. In this regard, workshops and individual meetings with Divisional IT representatives have been continuing since mid-January to determine local requirements and to ensure that the new network design will meet their needs.
In order to provide information about the new network to other interested staff of Macquarie University, a Technical Presentation outlining the design for the new network has been organised for Friday 9 May 2008 at 1:00pm to 2:30pm in the C5C Lecture Theatre 1 and the Agenda is as follows:
1. Introductions / Welcome
2. Overview of Secure Control Core (SCC)
3. Network Upgrade - Project Overview
4. Network Design - Technical Overview
5. Q & A Session
All staff from Macquarie University are welcome to attend.
