CRSI Marks Anti-Poverty Week
Staff and students are invited to a series of free events to mark Anti-Poverty Week 2008, and coinciding with the United Nations International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. The events will run from Tuesday 14 to Thursday 16 October in the Central Courtyard, in front of the U@MQ Building.
With the theme Poverty in your Backyard, the week’s events are organised by the Centre for Research on Social Inclusion at Macquarie.
* Entertainment by Synthetic Apocalypse from the Hornsby Police Youth
Boys’ Club and acoustic guitarist Amy Newtown-Banks will be held Tuesday 14 October from 1-2pm.
* Open air speakers’ forums will be held on Wednesday 15 & Thursday 16 October from 1-2pm.
Speakers include
- The Hon. Lee Rhiannon MP (NSW Greens)
- The Hon. Graham West MP (NSW Minister for Youth)
- Salvation Army Officer Craig Stephens (Ryde Citizen of the Year)
- A/Prof. Michael Fine (Head of Sociology, MU)
- Two homeless students
- Special guest Dr Melba Padilla Maggay, community campaigner, academic and educator from the Philippines.
* Stalls by Oxfam, TEAR and more on Tuesday October 14, Wednesday October 15, and Thursday October 16 from 11am-3pm.
The Anti-Poverty Week activities reflect the Centre for Research on Social Inclusion’s commitment to raising public awareness about issues of social justice.
Activities are free. All are welcome.
